IllustrationFall foliage on Fort Drum and in the North Country: what to know
Fall color is on display across Fort Drum and the North Country, with recreation access rules, trail information and seasonal updates available for visitors.
Fall foliage is visible across Fort Drum and the North Country, including along walking routes, trails, training-area roads and parks. There is no single peak date for Fort Drum, so visitors should check the weekly I LOVE NY foliage report and local conditions before planning a trip.
Where can visitors see fall color on Fort Drum?
Fort Drum's fall color can be seen across the installation, including on trails, near parks, along roads and around community facilities. The post includes a mix of forested areas and developed locations, offering views during walks, drives and outdoor recreation.
A free Fort Drum recreation trail map can be downloaded from the iSportsman maps page or picked up at the Natural Resources Outreach Facility on Col. Reade Road, next to the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Museum.
When is peak foliage in Northern New York?
Peak color varies by location and weather, and no fixed peak date applies to Fort Drum, Jefferson County, Lewis County, St. Lawrence County or Tug Hill. The state's Oct. 14-20 foliage report said the Adirondacks and much of Central New York were mostly at peak, while the Thousand Islands-Seaway region was developing strong color.
New York's foliage report is updated each Wednesday using information from more than 100 volunteer observers. The state describes peak as the period when foliage has its best overall appearance. In a given area, the brightest color typically lasts about three to four days, while color generally moves outward from the Adirondacks and Catskills over roughly two weeks.
Nearby destinations listed for fall viewing include Robert G. Wehle State Park, where views extend from cliffs about 80 feet above Lake Ontario, and Sackets Harbor Battlefield. Statewide timing information places much of New York's 2026 peak period between Oct. 7 and 19, but that range should not be treated as a Fort Drum forecast.
Do you need a pass to hike in Fort Drum's training area?
Yes. Anyone entering the training area for recreation must have a Fort Drum Recreational Access Pass, including children. Check-in procedures also apply.
The current Fort Drum iSportsman website lists general adult passes at $25 for people 18 and older, valid through Dec. 31 for permitted training-area activities. The site says passes are sold online by credit card and lists youth passes as free.
Passes must be displayed in the vehicle on the driver's side, with one pass required for each person. Visitors should check the Fort Drum access page for current rules before entering.
What safety and road conditions should visitors expect?
Visitors should never touch suspicious objects in the training area because Fort Drum warns that unexploded ordnance can be life-threatening. The iSportsman website directs visitors to the installation's explosives safety information.
Drivers heading toward the cantonment area should watch for Mount Belvedere Boulevard closures and detours near the AAFES Mini-Mall and Candlewood Suites. The announced closure phases run Oct. 5-16 and Oct. 19-30.
Parking is prohibited on the shoulders of Fort Drum roadways and in housing areas from Nov. 1 through April 1. Warning citations are scheduled from Nov. 2-15, followed by citations.
Are guided hikes or fall events available?
Fort Drum's Natural Resources Branch has previously offered guided hikes with the installation forester in the Bonaparte Area Trail Complex. That route covers 5.6 miles and has been described as primitive, rugged and muddy; an earlier event took four to five hours and required a free recreation pass and email registration.
The post's fall calendar includes a Fall Volksmarch, a Trunk or Treat at Magrath Sports Complex and an October Fire Prevention Week open house. Details are posted through Fort Drum Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the Fort Drum news page.
Visitors should confirm event dates, registration requirements and access rules before making plans. The Bonaparte hikes referenced in Fort Drum event information were earlier programs, not a current 2026 event listing.
