Joe Butler Sr., a former Watertown mayor, has died. Butler was elected in 1999 and served as mayor from 2000 through 2003.
Before becoming mayor, Butler served eight years on the Jefferson County Legislature, then known as the Board of Supervisors. The city website says he also taught chemistry at Jefferson Community College for 27 years and was involved with several local civic organizations.
Watertown Mayor Sarah Pierce issued condolences to Butler’s family and remembered his service as an educator, civic leader, county legislator and mayor. The city website says Butler advocated for improved garbage removal, downtown revitalization and neighborhood beautification.
