Fort Drum included in planned nuclear power project

Fort Drum has been selected for a planned $2 billion Army project that will provide nuclear power to five military installations. The reactor is expected to begin operating before 2030.
The project is not expected to replace Fort Drum’s connection to the electrical grid. The installation would continue using grid power while gaining the ability to receive critical electricity from the reactor during an emergency. The Army also expects the North Country workforce and private sector to help with the project.
Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division support about $2 billion in annual economic activity and roughly 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.
