An individual was taken into custody after allegedly displaying a knife during one of two related altercations outside Potsdam High School shortly after dismissal Friday, Oct. 16, Superintendent Jerry Griffin said in a message to families.
The altercations occurred on the sidewalk outside the school and involved two students and another individual who was not in school that day but walked onto campus during the afternoon, Griffin said. School Resource Officer Darren Basford and high school administrators responded, and the situation was quickly brought under control.
The Potsdam Police Department is investigating. Griffin said there was no ongoing threat to students, staff or the school community related to the incidents.
The district serves 1,336 students across three schools, according to 2023-24 figures in the research brief. Families receive district communications through ParentSquare. The Potsdam Central School District can be reached at (315) 265-2000.
The investigation remains ongoing. People seeking information about custody status or charges can contact the Potsdam Police Department or the school district.
