New York has announced a $200 million round of water infrastructure funding that includes $18 million for wastewater treatment plant upgrades in Chateaugay and a reported $9.9 million award for water system improvements in Morristown. The funding combines state and federal grants with low-cost or interest-free financing intended to help communities modernize infrastructure without overburdening ratepayers.
The Village of Chateaugay, in Franklin County, is listed by the state for $18 million in funding for improvements to its wastewater treatment plant. The project includes disinfection work and replacement of aging equipment. The Environmental Facilities Corporation board approved the Chateaugay funding, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul's announcement.
Chateaugay Mayor Matthew Clarke also issued a statement about the award.
Morristown, in St. Lawrence County, was reported to receive $9.9 million in federal grant funding and interest-free financing. The reported project includes replacing 5,300 linear feet of water main, extending water mains by 2,800 linear feet, rehabilitating a water storage tank and replacing meters. It also includes replacing the village's diatomaceous earth water treatment plant with an ultrafiltration facility.
Together, the two reported North Country awards total about $28 million. That figure includes both grants and financing, rather than grants alone.
The funding is separate from a roughly $500 million round announced around Oct. 20 for 106 projects statewide. The North Country portion of that earlier round totaled $65 million for 10 projects, led by Henderson with $22.2 million and Elizabethtown with $14 million.
The new funding is intended to support water and wastewater infrastructure in communities including Chateaugay and Morristown. The projects affect local water and sewer systems and are designed to address treatment equipment, water mains, storage and related facilities.
New York's announcement and the state's water infrastructure information provide additional details about the funding round and approved projects. Project timing and construction updates will come from the municipalities and relevant state agencies.
