North Country sheriffs join lawsuit over New York law on ICE agreements
Sheriffs from Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties are among 15 New York sheriffs challenging a state law that blocks agreements between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

Sheriffs from Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties are among 15 New York sheriffs who filed a federal lawsuit challenging a New York law that blocks formal agreements between local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities. The case was filed in U.S. District Court in Albany on the day the law took effect.
The law also voids existing 287(g) agreements between local agencies and federal authorities. Jefferson, Franklin and Lewis counties had not sought such agreements, while St. Lawrence County was working toward an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement when the law passed. The lawsuit is the second legal challenge to the law; the federal government has also challenged it.
