About Billy

Billy Dunn49
The Big Gun

Billy Dunn is the winningest Modified driver in Can-Am Speedway history and one of the most decorated dirt racers the North Country has ever produced. The Watertown, New York native has piled up 142 career feature wins and 14 championships behind the wheel of the family-owned, rocket-red Number One Speed No. 49 — a Bicknell his father Norm fields with longtime crew chief Joe Combs on the box.

Dunn launched his racing career in 2001 and announced himself in a hurry, winning a New York State Modified title in just his second season. His first DIRTcar Big-Block feature came on July 8, 2006 at his home track, Can-Am Motorsports Park, and by 2007 he was chasing the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series against the best big-block runners in the Northeast. Nicknamed "Big Gun," he grew up idolizing North Country legends like Tim Fuller and the McCreadies, and today runs door-to-door with the region's biggest stars.

The trophy case runs deep: a 2013 Super DIRT Week win in the Syracuse 200 at the fabled Moody Mile, the 2021 DIRTcar 358 Modified Series championship, seven Can-Am track titles (most recently 2025), and the Oswego 358 track record of 20.688 seconds. In July 2026 he rewrote the record book again — passing Hall-of-Famer Pat O'Brien with his 74th Can-Am Modified win to become the track's all-time win leader, a milestone he is still adding to nearly every Friday night at Can-Am, Fulton, Mohawk and Utica-Rome.

Home Country

Based in Watertown in New York's Thousand Islands region, Dunn is a fixture of the Friday-night 358 Modified wars at Can-Am, Fulton, Mohawk and Utica-Rome, and points every October toward Super DIRT Week at Oswego, the crown jewel of Northeast dirt.

The 2013 Breakthrough

Dunn's star turn came at Super DIRT Week 2013. Leading the DIRTcar 358 Salute to the Troops 150 on the final lap, he ran out of fuel and lost the win — then came back the very next day to capture the big-block Syracuse 200 on the Moody Mile for roughly $50,000, his first Super DIRTcar Series crown-jewel victory.

The Split and the Return

The Dunn story hasn't been all smooth. In 2017 Billy stepped away from the family-owned operation after a well-documented falling-out with his father, Norm, over how to run their part-time Big-Block program. The break didn't stick: father and son reconciled, and today Norm again owns and wrenches the No. 49 that Billy has driven to the top of the Can-Am record book — proof the family bond outlasted the rough patch.

The Family No. 49

The red No. 49 is a true family effort — owned and wrenched by his father, Norm Dunn, powered by a Finger Lakes engine in a Bicknell chassis, with crew chief Joe Combs on the box, and carried by longtime backers Number One Speed, American Traditions Motorsports and Fastlube of Watertown.

2026 Season

Dunn has been on a tear in 2026: an early-season 71st Can-Am win in May, the record-breaking 74th at Can-Am in July, a $5,000 Tracey Road Modified win at Fulton in August, and week-in, week-out front-running at Can-Am and Fulton.
