Tensions Rise as US-Iran Ceasefire Talks Stall
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement signed in June, with disputes over economic sanctions and control of the Strait of Hormuz.

A temporary ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran, signed in June, has collapsed without progress toward a final deal. The interim memorandum called for an immediate halt to military operations on all fronts and included a 60-day window for negotiations on broader security concerns, including Iran's nuclear program. That deadline passed on August 17.
The breakdown has left key disputes unresolved, including control of the Strait of Hormuz and the scope of U.S. economic pressure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Thursday that the U.S. is preparing "unprecedented economic action" against Iran, saying new measures would be announced the following week.
Iran's newly appointed head of its Basij paramilitary force said Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz remains "under Iran's control and management," contradicting U.S. assertions of control over the vital shipping route. National security analysts have warned that Iran could escalate military operations in response to increased sanctions pressure, potentially including attacks on commercial vessels and infrastructure in the Persian Gulf region.
Two vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz were struck recently, according to the United Arab Emirates' state-run news agency. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company reported no injuries and said the situation was under control.
